Background & Context

Dental Stack is a B2B healthtech platform built to digitize and connect Orthodontists, Aligner Companies, Design Labs, and Patients.

This project extended the existing two-party planning order system to support three-party collaboration: Practices send orders to Aligner Companies (Referred further as ‘ORG’), who can outsource plan creation to Design Labs.

We were moving quickly with very few resources: no direct access to users, no analytics, and tight timelines. Most of the input came through my Manager, based on conversations with customers and what they were asking for.

Key user types

User Type Persona (real-world) What they can do (on the portal)
Practice (Clinicians) Orthodontist or clinic owner who treats patients and wants an easy way to send aligner cases and track which plan was finally used for treatment. Send planning orders to the Aligner Company (ORG); review treatment plans; approve or request re-plan; finalize one plan to move forward with treatment.
ORG (Aligner Providers) Aligner Company that offers aligner planning and manufacturing services to many clinics, often acting as the main commercial and clinical partner for Practices. Receive planning orders from Practices; create treatment plans internally or outsource them to a Design Lab; clone plans between Design Lab and Practice; manage which plans get approved.
Design Lab (Planning Labs) Specialized planning team or lab that focuses only on creating high-quality aligner treatment plans for aligner companies. Receive outsourced planning orders from ORG; create and edit treatment plans; upload STL files; assign and manage work within their internal team.

tl;dr

Connected three key players in clear aligner planning - Clinicians, Aligner Providers, and Planning Labs - through a linked, two‑order system that supports outsourcing, cloning, and approvals without breaking existing workflows. The design introduced purchase orders, plan cloning with role‑specific flows, controlled approval and re‑plan cascades, and STL access rules so each party keeps the right level of control and visibility.

Potential Impact

Early conversations suggested this module could unlock at least one customer worth ~INR 5L in new MRR on its own. More importantly, It positions Dental Stack as the infrastructure for how labs, aligner providers, and clinics work together, not just as a single‑clinic tool.

What existed before

We already had a two-party planning order system:
